Seborrheic Dermatitis

It’s itchy, annoying, and embarrassing, but it isn’t contagious or a sign of poor personal hygiene. Seborrheic dermatitis, sometimes called seborrheic eczema, is a skin condition that can affect any area of the body where sebaceous glands are present — basically anywhere except the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet.

The most common region affected is the scalp, where it manifests as itchy white flakes (dandruff) or crusty yellow scales. While the cause remains unknown, one theory is that seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction to excess Malassezia yeast, a microorganism that lives on the surface of the skin. Stress is also a potential trigger, as is depression, cold weather, and a history of other skin disorders, like rosacea or psoriasis.

Treatment

Seborrheic dermatitis is treated with a combination of self-care strategies and topical therapies. For body rashes, your dermatologist may recommend sulfur and zinc-based soaps and washes that soothe and moisturize the skin deeply. Prescription antifungals, topical calcineurin inhibitors, and corticosteroids are also excellent options when your flare up needs a little extra help. Scalp seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff) is usually managed with prescription-strength anti-dandruff shampoos.
